Fellowship Village Residents take a trip to China
For Immediate Release
October 1, 2005

How do you get a group of 40 senior citizens to take a 4 week-long trip around China ? Easy, just send them to Fellowship Village , a Continuing Care Retirement Community in Basking Ridge. Last month, Fellowship Village 's recreation department sponsored a four week-long event series entitled “Exploring China." The program offered residents the opportunity to experience China 's people, history and culture by tasting, touching, seeing, hearing and smelling, right in their very own home.

The four-part series created by Courtney Matson, a Bernardsville resident and summer employee to Fellowship Village 's recreation department, with the assistance of Marilyn Chiang, a recreation assistant at Fellowship Village. Courtney, a Middlebury College senior, recently returned to the United States after an eight month trip to China , where she studies the Chinese language, history and culture.

Part one of the series provided an overview of China which included a short documentary, photo slideshow and a Chinese tea and biscuit tasting. Part two focused on Chinese calligraphy and brush painting, where residents learned the history and significance of both art forms in Chinese life. Residents also had an opportunity to use a traditional brush and ink to make their own masterpieces. Part three in the series was a lecture on Chinese history. Starting from the earliest traces of Chinese civilization, moving through each dynasty and up through the cultural revolution, Chairman Mao and present day China. Residents learned how China changed and what shaped those changes. The series came to a conclusion with a lesson in Chinese cooling, followed by a traditional dinner, complete with formal invitations and name cards. The dinner, which was cooked and served by the residents and staff, would not have been possible without the help of residents Alice Sheng, Mr. & Mrs. Chen and Mr. & Mrs. Hsien. The series was a huge success, an event that will be long-remembered by residents and staff alike.
