Releases Marvin Mahan & Herbert Blevins, residents of Fellowship Village Continuing Care Retirement Community in Basking Ridge, visited the 7 th grade students of the Bedminster School on Tuesday, December 6 th . Marvin & Herb provided a personal teaching approach educating the kids on what it was like to live through the Great Depression of the 1930's. Both men grew up on farms in the mid-west and experienced the difficult times that their families experienced. After college, which by the way cost an average $65 per year, Marvin & Herb, independently, moved east for career opportunities. When asked what most important life lesson these times taught them, both men had similar answers, “responsibility; you never thought about not working”. The students enjoyed this personal approach to learning which coincides with their current lessons from the novel by Karen Hesse, Out of the Dust . The book is about a 14 year old girl's experience growing up in the Dust Bowl. The students did quite a bit of research on the time period prior to their visit by Mr. Mahon & Mr. Blevins. The sharing of their life stories confirmed what these 7 th grade students had been studying. Fellowship Village and Bedminster School partner on several intergenerational events to raise youth awareness and develop sensitivity to our aging population.
